Sapelo Island

A day trip to a place I have never been. There are a few, maybe 50, residents on the island. But no longer do they have a school. There are 5 kids who take the ferry to the mainland everyday for school and get back home by 4pm. I didn’t see a store that was open. There may have been a small grocery store that our tour did not stop at. There were several vacation homes on the island that are used for that purpose or rented out. Despite no apparent businesses , there was a lot of activity due to the UGA research activities. There were a lot of cars parked at each end of the ferry ride because workers go there every day and need transportation on each end. Of course, any cars or gasoline or building supplies have to go by barge to the island. There is one gas pump on the island that is self operated and open 24 hours a day. The island does have internet access but I did not get any details on that. I did find out that Georgia Power ran undersea cables to take power to the island. Can’t imaging what it was like before that!
