Last minute cancellations

I didn’t think my wife would have any luck trying to get into Jekyll Island Campground a few days early because they stay totally booked way ahead. We had T6 starting 2/15/21 and she spotted an opening on T1 for 2/12/21 which will give us 3 extra days! Way to go Mama C.

BUT…then I get a call from Jekyll Campground saying that we book T1 and is will only hold a 30 foot camper and ours is 34 feet…so forget it. They did offer us a site of Sat and Sun, just two days, which is fine. So we do get to extend our stay for two extra days. We are glad of that.

The Golden Ray

The Golden Ray has been drawing onlookers every since it rolled over. The MV Golden Ray was a 200-metre (660 ft)-long car carrier that capsized on 8 September 2019 . She was eventually declared a total loss, and is being removed as scrap. We were camping on Jekyll in February of 2020 and saw the work just beginning.

Instability from a cargo load that left the ship’s center of gravity too high likely caused the Golden Ray to capsize just over a year ago in the St. Simons Sound, according to modeling conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard. … The 656-foot ship and its cargo of more than 4,000 cars has remained in the St.

Sharks at jekyll island – Google Search

The area surrounding Jekyll Island and St. Simons Island is known to be one of the  largest breeding grounds in the world for sharks. Our most common targets for sharks are the Black Tip and Spinner sharks.

The first shark attack was posted on May 12, 2014. The Savannah Morning News reported that a 12-year-old boy surfing at Tybee Island was attacked by what was thought to be a small shark, but that was never officially confirmed. The boy’s wound required hospitalization and 11 stitches.  Between 2007 and 2016, there were four non-fatal shark attacks in Georgia.

Georgia reported seven bites between 2000-2019, a 20-year average of 0.35 bites per year. Only four coastal states haven’t reported a shark bite over the past 20 years: Alaska, Connecticut, Maryland and New Hampshire.

Many species of shark are known to come closer to shore during dusk, dawn, and night time hours. Do not swim or surf during these high risk time frames.  Sharks are predators first and foremost. They will seek out prey that is isolated more quickly than those that are not.

While sharks were at one time the reigning royalty of the undersea world, they do have several formidable enemies other than man. … The great squid and salt-water crocodile are both fierce shark hunters. The killer whale has been seen to swallow a shark whole.

Jekyll Island Ga

This has become a February trip that we look forward to. We meet some camping friends by the name of David and Sherry Martin at Jekyll Island Campground and enjoy a nice change in climate from North Georgia where we are all from. Jekyll is far enough south to be shorts weather even in February.

The memory from last year that I have laughed the most about has to do the “glass ball” treasure hunt that Jekyll does every year. Sherry became obsessed with finding one. We helped her look for days but did not find one. So we decided to play a trick on Sherry and bought a look alike in the campground store and hid it near her camper. I felt her looking at me while I tried to inconspicuously hide it. But finally got it done. Her reaction was hilarious.

Island Treasures

January 1-February 28, 2021

In the early 1900s, east coast fishermen used hollow glass balls, or floats, on their nets as markers. Occasionally, the floats would break loose and wash ashore for lucky beachcombers to find and keep. Collecting these rare, highly sought after glass floats became a hobby in the 1950s.

Today, Jekyll Island hand-picks artists from across the country to create one-of-a-kind glass floats for its annual Island Treasures event. The glass floats are part of a hide-and-seek style game played on Jekyll Island throughout January and February. Each day, volunteers called Beach Buddies will hide clear globes around the island for lucky guests to find and redeem for a real glass float. Gather your friends and family to search for globes that can be exchanged for dazzling handcrafted glass float
